Making Money on Unused Vehicles

Generally speaking, not many of us have unused vehicles however we frequently do have ones that are coming to the end of their lives. These are vehicles that have little or no resale value and are of a particular age.

When faced with dealing with an end of life vehicle we have very few options as members of the public. We can either keep the vehicle in storage or have it taken to a local scrap yard. Others sometimes decide to abandon vehicles on the streets however this can cause huge problems for local councils. If the vehicle is still registered to you then you are also still responsible for it.

Scrap yards are often misunderstood places but they are places where money can be made on your unused or end of life vehicles. Most reputable scrap yards will buy old or unused vehicles off you as they can either break down the vehicle metals for recycling or resell reusable parts. One of the biggest misconceptions is that scrap yards only take junk vehicles.

Most scrap yards will take a range of vehicles and are particularly happy to take on newer vehicles. This is because they can often get more value out of these vehicles. The parts for example are much easier to sell on with newer vehicles. Scrap yards are also a great source of car parts.

When looking to make use of a scrap yard you should look at getting several quotes and doing some basic research. If you have an unused vehicle then you might want to look at the resale value of a vehicle. This can be done using one of the many websites online. You can then weigh up the options of whether to scrap your car or try to sell it on.

If you have an end of life vehicle then your only option will be to scrap to it. Despite this you might want to look at trying to sell a couple of parts privately. This can be a great way to squeeze some extra cash out of your vehicle. Alloy wheels are often a good place to start.

Once you have gotten several quotes you will need to make your decision. Make sure you read the terms and conditions carefully. Some companies will charge you for vehicle pickups. You are also within your rights to negotiate the price. If you have a reasonably new unused vehicle you will be in a good position. Scrap yards will be desperate for these vehicles and your ability to negotiate becomes much stronger.

Using a scrap yard couldn?t be easier however there are a couple of things to look out for. Firstly you will want to ensure that they provide you with a certificate of destruct. This means that legal responsibility for the vehicle no longer resides with you. This is important as otherwise you will still be responsible for anything that vehicle is used for. You will also want to make sure they destruct your vehicle in an environmentally friendly manner.

Of course making large quantities of money on end of life or unused vehicles is unlikely. Scrap yards simply provide an incentive to help vehicle owners not abandon them.
