Driver’s Mate You Love to Hate

Some people are heaven to drive with ? other’s can be hell! If you do self employed courier jobs, here are four kinds of people not to let near your van.

No van is complete without a driver’s mate sitting in the passenger seat, and if you do self employed courier jobs and you have your own van, from time to time you may have a driver’s mate occupying the front seat. Perhaps you want the company, perhaps you need help with some of your work, or maybe you’re doing someone a favour and taking their son out to work.

Whatever the reason, there are some people that are great company to drive with, who will help you navigate and keep the jokes coming thick and fast. Of course, there are plenty of others who are complete nightmares to be in a van with! From fiddling with the radio to littering all over the floor, there are plenty of ways a passenger can get on your nerves. Here are a few driver’s mates to avoid…

Litterbug

If you do self employed courier jobs, your van is more than just a vehicle ? it’s your office and workspace as well. A clean office leads to a calm mind, and there’s little more irritating than someone who is constantly making a mess of your personal space. Whether it is scattering crumbs, spilling tea, dropping wrappers or (worst of all!) depositing chewing gum, make sure you kerb that Litterbug before he causes a stain that simply won’t come out!

Back Seat Driver

He may be sitting next to you in the front of the van, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still act like a back seat driver! Whether it’s telling you to hurry up or slow down, suggesting shortcuts that double your journey time, or criticising any other aspect of your driving, a Back Seat Driver is one of the worst people to share a vehicle with. Make sure they know that criticising your driving is a strictly off-limits topic of conversation.

Delayed Reaction Navigator

A good passenger is a good map reader, and the Delayed Reaction Navigator tries hard and wants to help. But their reactions are a little slow ? they’ll always seem to tell you which turning to take or junction to get off at just a few seconds after you’ve passed it by. If you find yourself having to turn around and backtrack on every one of the self employed courier jobs that you do, the chances are that you are stuck with this kind of driver’s mate. It’s probably best to just take the map off them and try and do it yourself, or better still, invest in a GPS device.

Radio Fiddler

The rules of the road are pretty simple ? everyone knows that the driver is the one with the final say over what music is played, whether it is radio, a CD, or simply blissful silence. But some passengers simply don’t understand this basic rule. While you are occupied with your driving, they’ll take every opportunity to fiddle with the volume, change radio stations, or stick on their favourite rap-metal CD. Don’t stand for this rebellion ? your van, your tunes. No exceptions!
