GM says it will run out of money in the next couple of months. Ford had money on had to run until the end of next year, but with the 1930’s era sales levels they are burning their cash at a much faster rate than anticipated and now say they have about 7 months of cash on hand —not enough to reach their 2010 rollout of fuel efficient sporty new cars.

Th belief is if GM fails and creidtors will force the liquidation of their vehicles to recover their cash. This will futher damage Chrysler & Ford, likely forcing them under. For every factory worker, there are at least 7.5x as many people down the road (dealerships and whatnot)involved in new car sales. It is estimated at 10% of the total US workforce.

Should the government give the auto industry what they want? ($50B loan bailout) Should they give each manufacturer a different deal, depending on how much of a commitment they show to fuel efficiency improvements in new models? What is the answer?
NPR covered a bit of this one one of their news shows… What would happen if the automanufacturers were allowed to fail…15% increase on all cars, with the vast majority of that money going overseas. In the short term all automanufacturers would be impacted. A huge part of the components of used to assemble a car are manufactured by American small businesses. As much of 70% of their business comes from the American auto industry. It is likely those companies would fail. If that is the case part prices would skyrocket until new manufacturers came on line. Older cars would no longer have new parts, forcing Americans to buy the new more expensive forign cars. And that is just on the car/consumer end of the deal.

I am not a fan of American cars of the past, but letting the industry fail hits me as a huge, dangerous mistake.

What do you think about the new features,
Do you think its better, worse, ??????

DETROIT – So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will give you the power to do something about it.

The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.

Parents also have the option of programming the teen’s key to limit the audio system’s volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn’t wear a seat belt.

“Our message to parents is, hey, we are providing you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.

The feature, called “MyKey,” will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

Ford arrived at the 80 mph limit even though freeway speed limits are lower in most states because it wanted to leave a margin in case an unusual situation arises, Buczkowski said. In some states, freeway speed limits are above 70 mph, Sherwood said.

“Just lopping it off at exactly 70 mph was felt to be too limiting,” Buczkowski said.

The company already uses computer chips in its keys to prevent thefts. The car won’t start unless it recognizes the chip in the key.

“It’s making use of existing technology, and through the magic of software, we’re able to build features on top of the features we already have,” Buczkowski said.

In addition to speed limits, MyKey also will limit the volume of the audio system, and it will sound a six-second chime every minute if seat belts are not fastened. The chime sounds for adult drivers, too, but ends after five minutes to avoid annoying adults who adamantly don’t want to wear seat belts, Buczkowski said.

Parents also have the option of having the car sound a chime if the teen exceeds 45, 55 or 65 mph.

The feature will debut on the 2010 Focus compact car and quickly move to other company models as a standard feature, the company said.

Ford said its market research shows 75 percent of parents like the speed and audio limits, but as you might expect, 67 percent of teens don’t like them.

Danisha Williams, a 16-year-old senior at Southfield-Lathrup High School in suburban Detroit, said she’s against the idea.

“I wouldn’t want my parents to have that much control over how I’m driving,” she said. “If your parents are holding your hand, you’re never going to learn.”

Brittany Hawthorne, 17, another Southfield-Lathrup senior, said there may be emergency situations where she’d have to drive more than 80, possibly to accelerate to avoid a crash.

Ford’s research shows that parents would be more likely to let teens use their vehicles with the system, Sherwood said, and if it gets them the car more often, the number of teens objecting drops by nearly half.

A top official from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the auto insurance industry that is pushing to raise the minimum driving age to 17 or 18, found the key intriguing and said she was not aware of any other manufacturer offering such a feature. IIHS says car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers.

“Research we’ve done has shown that speeding is a major factor in teen crashes, especially novice teen drivers,” said Anne McCartt, the institute’s senior vice president for research. “So I think a system that tries to correct the speeding behavior has the potential to improve safety.”

More than 5,000 U.S. teens die each year in car crashes. The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers ages 30 to 59, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Several U.S. auto insurers have begun offering in-car cameras or global positioning equipment to help parents monitor their teens’ driving behavior, in the hope of reducing the number of crashes.

After the tabloids and the news dealt with of the troubles in the designs of automaker Toyota Motor Corp., is saving the apologies and adding new advertisements as they simply rise back into sales. It relies on these brand loyalists who can turn skeptical shoppers into potential buyers. But some say it is too soon.

The commercial tries to persuade for loyalty among Toyota customers remain loyal amidst legislative inquiries and reports that the remedies they are doing may not work out. In one of the preview of the television commercial, baby boomer Mark Murphy says, “And our own personal experience? These cars that we’ve had have been exceptionally safe”. He then bought a new Toyota car last February 2 It started last March 2 and is scheduled to run until April 5.

However, marketing experts say that people may need time to take in controversies from big brands like Toyota as it would only confuse them all the more. The move may have a constructive effect by courting loyal consumers but may also antagonize others if the tactic is taken the other way. The public may see it as a mockery of the safety concerns surrounding real issues with Toyota. It should not push too soon. Like Ford Motor Co. in 2000. It was cited that the companies eased off a little bit in order to properly address the 250 deaths cause by the blowouts of Bridgestone tires used on SUVs.

The first Toyota major sales push since their apology showcases a five year zero financing and an auto maintenance plans for new owners challenging luxury brands. Toyota?s sales fell 9 percent last month. The new commercial aims to give it a little improvement after the advertisements telling car owners that they were taking care of the problem. The commercials are deliberately centers on keeping a positive outlook regarding the brand according to Deborah Mitchell, a senior executive fellow at the Wisconsin School of Business. She said they work because they market so many loyalists which something rare for other companies to pull off during such a difficult time. But, ?If consumers decide Toyota has lied to them, there will be a huge backlash.”

Nonetheless, experts say that buyers will not like the idea of images of promotions of the brand. They would rather appreciate serious campaigns that aim to inform them that Toyota is taking care of the problem. Some says that it would be best if Toyota stop advertising temporarily and shift to answering the questions through a medium that offers authority. “When there’s a very negative story connected with a brand, it’s extremely difficult for any paid advertising to deal with that issue because it’s self-serving,” said Al Ries, chairman of Ries & Ries, a marketing strategy firm in Atlanta. “It’s not helping.”

Except Toyota wants to a little improvement in their sales after it dropped. It is the first time that the shoppers fell after the company models were suspended on Jan. 26. Toyota Vice President Bob Carter told reporters that they are looking forward to change their focus to sales now after taking the time off last month. “Frankly as an organization, we turned our sights away from sales and went 100 percent at taking care of our customers. It was the right thing to do and now coming in March, we’re back in the sales business,” he said.

This is the most logical question that anyone and everyone has on their minds. Is the auto industry out of the woods? Is the impact of Recession over? Or, are we inching closer to an end of Recession and its subsequent impact on the car sales across the World?

Now, to be honest, these are very subjective questions that do not have a clear cut answer. Since it is too broad a question, let us try and analyze the available yardsticks that can help us decide or know about the possible direction that the automotive industry is taking for the immediate future.

To begin with, I cannot stop discussing Toyota because if the recalls did not happen the statistics for the automotive industry would have been somewhat better than they have been. So, Toyota?s recalls did dent new sales and deprive a true measure of the success of auto industry. This is especially true for the UK and US markets.

If you have access to the February Sales figures for major countries, then we can talk about an improved performance for all the automotive manufacturing companies, albeit a few that fell on the way because of snags, glitches and recalls (read Toyota). Automakers in the US have reported increase in sales for the month of February and the overall increase has been 13% over last February. All manufacturers, with the exception of Toyota reported increase in Sales with Ford reporting a 24% increase to topple General Motors as the number one maker in the US.

In UK, the automakers have reported a 26% increase in sales, thus making it another positive development. Surprisingly, Toyota has managed an increase of 15% over last February sales. Canada has reported a 25% increase in February sales over the same period last year. Interestingly, Toyota Canada has reported a 25% increase despite all the hue and cry on the recalls.

So, now we head over to the other part of the world. Australia has reported a 17% increase in new car sales with Toyota coming trumps with a 17.8% increase in the sales of new cars for the month of February.

India has reported an increase of 30% in auto sales for the month of February with each manufacturer clocking massive gains. This includes Ford, General Motors and Suzuki. Japan has already declared that the sales of cars, autos and trucks have increased by 35% in February, thus making it one of the healthiest months for automakers.

In China, General Motors has reported a 51% increase in Sales while Ford has reported a 37.5% increase in sales for the month of February.

Now, if you were to get the conclusion from these numbers then we have some sort of good news emerging. Each automaker has reported an increase in new vehicle sales. And the trend is Global in nature from Asia to Europe to the US. Be it Ford or General Motors, things are looking up for all of them. Even Toyota has been able to post a handsome increase in many countries and the impact of recalls is being felt more in the UK and the US.

The increase in Sales is a testimony to the fact that we may not be out of the Recession completely, but we are getting there. And I would say that the trend is likely to sustain over the entire year and that too across the Globe. By the end of the year, if the automotive sector does not look green, then at least the next year will be greener.

Japanese people are known the world over for their hard work, sincerity and commitment to their industry and country. Akio Toyoda?s initiatives to mitigate the impact of recent recalls and his apology to Chinese public and US Congressional Committee should be seen in the light of efforts being made by the Group to resurrect the brand of Toyota.

And, within one month of announcement of the first massive Global recall, Akio has finally had a reason to smile. Or should we say that the Japanese people have reposed their faith in Toyota. How else can you explain the 48% year-on-year increase in sales of Toyota vehicles in the month of February in Japan followed by 30% in China?

Toyota?s Japan sales indicate that the customers have given a huge thumbs-up to the beleaguered automotive giant. While Honda reported a 36% increase in February sales, Nissan managed an 18% increase. This makes Toyota the leader as far as increase in sales is concerned.

Interestingly, the maximum increase took place for the luxury model Lexus and its sales grew by 257% to 3373 units. One must spare a thought for the Lexus that has been at the heart of many lawsuits in the US. The details of February sales, as shared by the Japanese Automobiles? Dealers? Association (JADA), is sure to give a massive boost to Toyoda?s efforts in taking his Group past the recalls.

Figures from China indicate that Toyota?s sales increased by 30% in the month of February, and this is again based on a year-on-year calculation.
With China and Japan accounting for major markets of Toyota outside US and Europe, it seems that the Global recalls have not had much of an impact in these regions. On the contrary, it appears that the recalls worked to Toyota?s advantage and improved its ‘trust factor? and that has worked in its favour.

The people, at large, seem to have given an approval to Toyota?s recalls and have infact patted the automotive giant for going ahead with one of the most massive recalls in the auto-industry across the Globe.

It looks like the story that comes right off the tinsel town. An automotive giant goes in for a massive recall to fix issues with gas pedals, and then apologizes to the customers and regulatory authorities. It has had a glorious past and customer reputation. And with the recalls, it positions itself as a caring and responsible automotive provider.

Following the recalls, It ensures that the recalls go in a seamless way thereby impressing the people back home in Japan to consider that the Group did the best to fix a glitch that could have impacted any other manufacturer.

In essence, the company has been successful in portraying genuine intentions in addressing glitch in products. And it has definitely succeeded in sounding a responsible automotive manufacturer by admitting to its mistakes and subsequently apologizing to the consumers for all the inconvenience caused.

On its part, Toyota would have learnt the lessons a hard way. There is no doubt that the Company will need to put its house in order to prevent a recurrence of such a massive recall in future. And there is no doubt that the things had come to such a pass because of botch-ups. And it appears that a massive recall was the only way out for the Company.

Whether the Company succeeds in winning the confidence of US Congress is something that will unfold in the coming weeks. For now, the Company has reasons to cheer the trust of Chinese and Japanese.

For once, Toyoda can sleep easy. Things seem to be falling in place after a hectic pace of meetings, apologies and steps taken to stem the downslide.

When buying a car, do you A; go for brand new model and pay the full price, getting everything tailored to your taste? Or do you B; go for a second hand model at a slightly cut down price that may be full of character and style, but has been ultimately chosen by someone else, for someone else?

In one corner, it?s easy to see the appeal of a new shiny metallic Jaguar XF with the exact exterior paint colour and warm charcoal leather interior you hand picked. With the extensive choice now on offer, each car can now effectively be unique. From heated seats and headrests to an electric rear window sunblind, each tiny detail you decide to add (or choose to do without) moulds your new car to your own personality. But with each of these choices adding a little (or rather a lot actually) to increase the price tag, is it really worth it?

So, why not think about buying a second hand XF? In truth the XF?s can?t really be that out of date anyway, 3 years at the most, so you know that you?re buying something that?s still very much in style. As well as that there?s the obvious decrease in price, and depending on each individual car, you?d get a certain amount of the afore mentioned gadgetry already built in. You can also rest your conscience a little that you are recycling a car, instead of buying a brand new model that will have had a huge impact on the environment during its manufacture.

However, if the environmental impact does nothing to sway your choice, then if you?re considering buying second hand you might need to mull over some of these points. Like the huge increase in the mileage and general wear and tear that could mean you need to factor in repair costs, and new tyres and new break pads at the very least.

Also, it?s worth considering that if you?re going to buy an XF second hand, you?re still looking at 38 to 40 thousand so why not pay a little more to have it custom made to your own tastes? Heated outside windows here or a voice activated navigation system there?

Although luxury has always been high on the agenda at Jaguar it has never been forgotten that in essence a car should simply be able to get you comfortably and safely from A to B, have enough seats for the passengers, and hopefully enough boot space for their luggage. The XF is a brilliant model whether it?s filled with extras or not. It?s improvement in space over the S-type is great, from the added boot space to the heightened headroom. So however much you feel (or don?t feel) you really need all those little gadgets and options that make your vehicle individual, at the end of the day, a new or used Jaguar XF is going to be a good investment.

Visibility is one of the most essential part when you are driving, a driver should be able to spot where they are going to elude hitting something or anyone .Car lights are very significant to a driver?s safety because they enhance the visibility on the street and maintain the driver and the passengers safe and sound especially in driving through feebly lighted areas. There are numerous types of lights used in cars specifically in Ford Mustangs; each with its own specific and important function and definite location in the automobile.

The Ford Mustang Headlights is sometimes referred to illumination produced by the lights installed on the front of your Mustang vehicle. The equipped light itself is in principle termed as headlight. Others may say that the term headlight is used to represent both the construction itself and the light formed. Mustang headlights without a doubt improve your line of vision when driving specially during the day. Mustang headlights can deliver the clear view you needed on the road. Mustang headlights are also very important to use whenever it rains or snow because the headlights on your Ford Mustang will absolutely increase your capability to see and contrive your movements during these times and definitely these will make your cars much more noticeable to other vehicles and pedestrians on the roadway.

The Taillight or stop lamp is set up at the back end of the car. This will enable the driver of the preceding car time to slow down. Mustang Tail lights is made up of the tail lamp bezel or tail light frame. Mustang Tail light lens improves the car?s style while adding security to the driver and the passengers. They have wire casing fixed over the lenses for safeguard and an extra hard and fashionable look. Latest Mustang models use lucid bulbs and red reflector. You?re going to find that each and every model is going to vary, so it?s important that you research what type of taillight that your car uses to ensure that you get the right product.

Safety issues are always raised when buying a car that is why car producers provide their cars with the latest and ground-breaking features that could be positioned on their vehicles to make them dependable and safer. One of this features are the Fog lights. They are set up and mounted on the framework of your Ford Mustang. Fog lights give extra lighting during rough weather specially on rainy and winter season, helping you find the road safely. Mustang fog lights work as a complement to your headlights.

It’s a warm sunny day, the kind where you like to wash and wax the car. You go to your local big box store’s auto section and pick out your supplies. As you check out, you get that ever-prevalent question about bagging your purchase; paper or plastic?or a reusable shopping bag for a dollar and ninety-nine cents? You decide to spring for the reusable
bag and load in your purchase. At home as you begin to clean the car you wonder what else you might do with your car to promote green and eco friendly living.

First, consider your car and what kind it is. What was one of its biggest selling points for you? Was it the mileage and how low it was or the horsepower underneath the hood? No doubt, car manufacturers have thwarted several attempts to be eco-friendly by giving people what they want with what they don’t want. A muscle car of the 1960s was built with tons of horsepower but only got 12 to 15 miles per gallon. It wasn’t uncommon to find some of these cars with only 10 miles per gallon. In today’s society, cars can go to zero to 60 in mere seconds and give car owners at least 20 miles or more per gallon.

Moreover, a car doesn’t always get its top mileage. You really have to keep it in peak condition if it’s to perform well. That means making sure oil and air filters are replaced regularly. Additionally, you must check your tire pressure routinely to ensure optimal mileage. Did you know that driving with inadequately filled tires can reduce gas efficiency a whopping fifteen percent? Washing and waxing your car provides a good time to ponder more efficient ways to use your vehicle.

If you find that you need to return to the store, think about consolidating your trip. Maybe you shouldn’t have made a trip for the detergent and wax after all. Maybe you should have put it on your grocery list. Most big box stores have a section for auto basics that include detergent, wax and even that tire pressure gauge. If they don’t have what you need in the big box store, at least stop at the auto parts store in the same trip.

Another way to be eco-friendly is to carpool. Many states have a ride-share program that help people to get to work but it’s a bit ineffective for a variety of reasons. First, people may have trouble getting their work schedules on the same page. Second, they may not be comfortable posting their work schedule for anyone to see. An alternative to this is to share rides with a neighbor. These are people you most likely know and often spend time with. Not only are you being eco-friendly but you’re having adult conversations.

There are a lot of ways we can lead greener lives, and using reusable shopping bags is only a start. Spending a little time thinking about your driving habits, and how they could be improved, could really reduce your carbon footprint!
